Chapter 2. Getting Started

This tutorial will walk you through connecting to a server and using basic Imptalk™ functionality. It is assumed you have already successfully installed Imptalk™, see the Appendix for help installing.

2.1. Preparing

First you must setup a push-to-talk key so you will be able to talk with others. Pressing a push-to-talk key captures audio from a selected source, like a microphone, and lets other people you are talking with hear you.

Binding a Push-to-Talk Key

  1. To bind a push-to-talk key, go to File->Preferences at the menu in the top.

  2. Then click the edit field next to where it says Push-to-Talk Key and press any key on your keyboard or mouse button you would like to use.

  3. Now click Ok to save your changes.

Now you are ready to setup a Profile and start talking.

2.2. Setting Up Your First Profile

In order to connect to a server and communicate, you first need to setup a profile. You only need to setup a profile once for each server you would like to connect to as the profiles will be saved for later.

Creating a Profile

  1. Click the New button to create a new Profile and give it a name. A profile can be named whatever you would like as it is for your reference only.

  2. Enter in the address and port for the server you would like to connect to. These are usually provided by the server's owner or administrator.

  3. Enter in a username you would like to be referred as. Only one user can use a specific username at a time. A username must be between 1 and 25 characters long.

  4. Entering a password is optional and is only required if an administrator registered your username or the server requires passwords for guest login. If you do not know, check with the server's owner or administrator.

  5. Enter a default channel you would like to join. You must join a channel in order to communicate with other users but you can join and leave other channels once connected.

  6. Click the Connect button to connect to the server. If an error occurs, you will be prompted with an appropriate error message explaining what happened.

2.3. Talking With Others

In order to talk with others you need to be in the same channel. You can join a channel automatically when connecting to a server by entering a default channel on the Profile page. To join a channel while connected, enter the name of the channel you would like to join into the edit field near the top of the program and press the Join button. Channel names are case sensitive and must be between 1 and 20 characters long. When you join a channel, that channel's name, followed by your username and usernames of others in the channel, will appear below. You can leave a channel at any time by pressing the to the right of the channel's name.

To talk, select the channel you would like to talk in and press the push-to-talk key you bound earlier and speak into your microphone. Release the push-to-talk key when you are done speaking. You may also bind a channel specific push-to-talk key which is useful when joining multiple channels at the same time.
